Other wood grain methods
The vast majority of wood graining books, pamphlets and videos often lead to ugly and unconvincing results. In fact, professionals refer to it as "Brown Stripe" wood grain (I know, lovely).
There are pamphlets about wood graining available at some hardware, craft and paint supply stores. The purpose of these is to sell you paint, glaze and tools, not teach you how to do amazing wood grain.
The best books on wood grain cost $80 or more and they're never wood grain specific: They tend to be general reference books on the subject of faux finishing so the authors cram many different finishes into one book so even the best wood grain sections tend to be brief and not comprehensive enough.
Another problem is that the best books are translated from French and Italian--even the decent translations leave much to be desired. There are some wood grain specific DVD's but the best of them cost over $100 and only teach how to paint one or two types of wood: They're not comprehensive methods that can be applied to any type of wood you want to match...

Most faux finishing "systems" say you MUST buy their "special" materials--aka insanely overpriced and hard to find-- in some cases, you even have to pay them to learn how complicated products work!!!.The facts: Most of the glazes, paints, colorants, primers, fillers, clear coats and other materials you'll be using are available in many forms from many companies and places. I don't get paid to push any one system, so I share my vast resources of suppliers. More importantly, I teach you what types of materials are best so you can find the best suppliers in your area.
As with the tools, you'll know the principles behind the materials used to paint perfect wood grain, so you'll be able to find alternatives as well as the best sources and prices.
Example: Acrylic clear coats (varnish) are used in dozens of industries. I've done lots of experimenting with them and found some that are super strong, fast drying, UV protecting, water clear, inexpensive, low-VOC, chemical resistant, tintable, water-thinnable! In short; practically miraculous. You're going to learn how to find amazing stuff like this.

The traditional way to teach wood grain is show a picture of faux Oak, Walnut, Pine... and then show how to paint it. That's a problem because they start with an example that's not real! So all you learn from other books, videos and even the super expensive workshops is how to paint someone else's version of painted wood!
